Before anything is dug. The structural layer. Road base or crushed rock goes in as the load bearing course, wetted and plate compacted so the particles lock together instead of sitting loose. Over that, a finer screenings or crusher dust layer is screeded to a smooth finish, with the falls set deliberately rather than left to whatever the old yard happened to do. This is the stage where the drainage design becomes physical, and after this point it cannot be adjusted without lifting everything above it.
Compaction, at least twice. The base is compacted more than once and taken as hard as it can practically be made. Under compaction is the failure homeowners never see arriving, because a soft base looks flawless on handover day and only declares itself as hollows and low spots after a wet summer of being rained on and walked over.
Membrane, where it is used. Many installers lay a geotextile weed barrier across the finished base, though Australian practice genuinely varies and some regard a correctly built, heavily compacted base as barrier enough. Worth asking which position your installer takes rather than assuming it is priced in.
The grass. Rolls are set out and left to relax before cutting, and every piece runs the same way, because the fibres lean in one direction and the lawn reads a slightly different shade depending on which way you look at it. Joins are made by trimming back a couple of stitch lines so no factory selvedge remains, butting the pieces together rather than overlapping them, and holding them from underneath with synthetic joining tape and adhesive, keeping fibres clear of the glue. Blades get changed often, since a blunt knife tears the backing instead of cutting it.
Edges and fixing. Perimeters are pinned at roughly 300mm to 400mm spacing into a prepared edge so the turf cannot creep or lift, and where the surface meets concrete or pavers the fixing switches to turf adhesive, often over a thin foam underlay. Infill and brushing. Kiln dried silica sand is spread at around 10 to 15 kilograms per square metre and power broomed into the pile. Summer storms are the design constraint on the base

It is not the annual rainfall total that breaks a lawn, it is the twenty minutes in February when a storm cell parks over the suburb and the whole yard has to move water at once. There is a trade off worth stating plainly here rather than burying at the bottom of the page. Set the two price columns against each other and the most common question about this topic answers itself. Budget turf is roughly $25 to $40 a square metre to supply and $75 to $95 supplied and laid. Around $50 a square metre of that has nothing to do with grass. It is excavation, spoil removal, road base, screenings, compaction plant, edging, sand and hours. Timing the job, and what the water argument really is
Turf can be laid year round in Brisbane, but the wet season changes the mechanics rather than just the comfort. Saturated ground is heavier to excavate and heavier to cart out, and saturated base material simply will not compact to the density the build needs, because trapped water stops the aggregate locking up.
